Open Flap Debridement

Advanced surgical treatment for moderate to advanced gum disease. Direct access to remove diseased tissue and bacteria below the gum line.

Understanding the Treatment

What is Open Flap Debridement?

Open flap debridement (OFD) is a surgical periodontal procedure in which the gum tissue is gently lifted (or "flapped") to provide direct access to the root surfaces and bone beneath. This allows Dr. Nurein to thoroughly remove diseased tissue, plaque, tartar, and bacteria that cannot be reached with non-surgical methods.

After thorough cleaning and debridement, the gum tissue is sutured back into place. This procedure is particularly effective for moderate to advanced gum disease and can be combined with bone grafting or tissue regeneration procedures for optimal results.

When is OFD Recommended?

Moderate to advanced gum disease (pockets > 6mm)
Failed response to non-surgical treatment (SRP)
Significant bone loss requiring direct visualization
Need for bone grafting or tissue regeneration
Specific areas with severe disease requiring surgical access
Step-by-Step Process

The OFD Procedure

1. Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure complete comfort. You will be awake but will not feel pain during the procedure.

2. Gum Flap Creation

A small incision is made in the gum tissue, and the gum is gently lifted to create a flap. This provides direct access to the root surfaces and underlying bone.

3. Debridement

Diseased tissue, plaque, tartar, and bacteria are carefully removed from the root surfaces and bone. The area is thoroughly cleaned.

4. Bone Evaluation

Dr. Nurein assesses the bone structure. If bone grafting or tissue regeneration is needed, it is performed at this time.

5. Flap Repositioning

The gum tissue is carefully repositioned and sutured back into place using fine sutures.

6. Post-Operative Care

Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to ensure proper healing and prevent complications.

Treatment Duration

Open flap debridement typically takes 1-2 hours depending on the extent of disease and whether additional procedures (bone grafting, tissue regeneration) are performed.

After Your Treatment

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery from open flap debridement is typically straightforward. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to normal activities within a few days.

Recovery Timeline

Days 1-3
Mild to moderate discomfort (managed with prescribed pain medication)
Days 4-7
Sutures are removed; most discomfort resolves
Weeks 2-4
Gum tissue continues to heal; avoid hard foods
Weeks 4-8
Complete healing; return to normal oral hygiene
3-6 Months
Full remodeling of gum and bone tissues

Aftercare Instructions

Take prescribed pain medication as directed
Use prescribed antimicrobial rinse (do not rinse vigorously)
Apply ice packs for the first 24 hours
Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods for 2 weeks
Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights
Avoid strenuous exercise for 1 week
Keep the surgical area clean but gentle
Attend all follow-up appointments
Maintain excellent oral hygiene after healing

Long-Term Success

The success of open flap debridement depends on your commitment to excellent home care and regular maintenance appointments. Maintenance visits every 3-4 months are essential to prevent disease recurrence.

Investment in Your Health

Cost of Open Flap Debridement

The cost of open flap debridement varies depending on the extent of disease, number of teeth affected, and whether additional procedures (bone grafting, tissue regeneration) are performed.

Cost: KES 10,000 per quadrant

We offer flexible payment plans to make treatment accessible. Most patients require 1-4 quadrants depending on disease extent and complexity.

Value: At KES 10,000 per quadrant, OFD is significantly more affordable than tooth extraction and replacement with dental implants (KES 120,000-250,000+ per tooth).
