What is Open Flap Debridement?
Open flap debridement (OFD) is a surgical periodontal procedure in which the gum tissue is gently lifted (or "flapped") to provide direct access to the root surfaces and bone beneath. This allows Dr. Nurein to thoroughly remove diseased tissue, plaque, tartar, and bacteria that cannot be reached with non-surgical methods.
After thorough cleaning and debridement, the gum tissue is sutured back into place. This procedure is particularly effective for moderate to advanced gum disease and can be combined with bone grafting or tissue regeneration procedures for optimal results.

When is OFD Recommended?
The OFD Procedure
1. Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is administered to ensure complete comfort. You will be awake but will not feel pain during the procedure.
2. Gum Flap Creation
A small incision is made in the gum tissue, and the gum is gently lifted to create a flap. This provides direct access to the root surfaces and underlying bone.
3. Debridement
Diseased tissue, plaque, tartar, and bacteria are carefully removed from the root surfaces and bone. The area is thoroughly cleaned.
4. Bone Evaluation
Dr. Nurein assesses the bone structure. If bone grafting or tissue regeneration is needed, it is performed at this time.
5. Flap Repositioning
The gum tissue is carefully repositioned and sutured back into place using fine sutures.
6. Post-Operative Care
Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to ensure proper healing and prevent complications.
